Pop writer Malcolm Gladwell defines tipping point as "the magic moment
when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and
spreads like wildfire." In this talk, we look at whether it is possible
to program (design a protocol for) large numbers of distributed
computers (a distributed system) in a similar loose (asynchronous)
manner, so that tipping points (and other emergent phenomena)
characterize the behavior of the entire large distributed system.
Simply put, the distributed system of computers behaves like a
distributed group of individuals. Concretely, we show how principles
from human social networks, from spreading of rumors, and from the
spreading of contagions, can be used to design protocols for sensor
networks, for spreading virus alerts, and for designing reliable
multicast protocols.
Bio:
Indranil Gupta is an assistant professor of Computer Science at UIUC. He
completed his PhD in Computer Science from Cornell University in 2004.
Indranil received the NSF CAREER award in 2005. He has previously worked
in IBM Research and Microsoft Research. He obtained his Bachelor of
Technology (Computer Science) from the Indian Institute of Technology
(IIT), Madras, in 1998. Indranil appears on the UIUC "Incomplete List of
Teachers ranked as excellent" three times in the last 3 years.
