The next generation of genome sequencing - challenges for
computational biology
- Prof. Matt Hudson

The need for extensive haplotyping in human genetics has spurred the
development of new technologies designed for resequencing of
individual genomes. These technologies use diverse methods, but all
rely on massively parallel bead-based approaches. Since these methods
produce very different data types to conventional sequencing, and
vastly greater data volumes, new approaches are necessary to handle
and process results from next-generation sequencing. In some cases a
single run from a single machine can generate 500GB of data. These
technologies are likely to drive the development of hardware and
software for computational biology over the near future. Applications
and approaches for next-generation genomics and data analysis will be
discussed.
