Summary:

A network reconfiguration for 3rd floor systems with IP addresses
beginning with 128.174.240.* and 128.174.241.* will occur on January
10th at 10am.  Affected systems will need their networking restarted
after the change for full network access.

What:

A network reconfiguration for the 128.174.240.* and 128.174.241.*
networks.  These networks will be merged into one larger network.
Systems in this new network will maintain their existing hostnames, IP
addresses, and networking jacks, but their IP netmask and gateway
information will change.  Systems can pick up this configuration change
via DHCP.


Who:
----
 
This reconfiguration affects a subset of systems on the third floor with
IP addresses starting with 128.174.240.* and 128.174.241.*.  (To lookup
your IP address, the firewall group lookup tool can be used:
http://webapps.cs.uiuc.edu/services/firewall/)  This change only
concerns research systems (not support staff,) and only the 240/241
networks.  Research systems in other networks on the third floor are not
affected.

When: 
-----

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007 at 10am.  The change should take less than
10 minutes.  Action is likely required post-maintenance to restore full
connectivity to affected systems.

How / Impacts: 
--------------

After the network change is made, systems will need to re-request their
networking information to pickup the change.  This can be done by
restarting the networking on the system (disabling and re-enabling the
networking interface on the system,) or simply rebooting it.  Systems
with old networking configurations in the new network will have partial
to full connectivity problems until their networking is restarted (so
console access may be required.)  TSG will contact admins of systems not
using DHCP to coordinate this change.

TSG can assist with getting systems prepared and updated for this
change.  Please coordinate those requests through userhelp at cs.uiuc.edu

Why: 
----

This change is part of a larger research IP space redesign that has been
underway incrementally the last 18 months.  This maintenance creates a
larger network to manage growth and to increase mobility of wired
systems on the third floor.
